Workpieces are clamped to the table by magnetic chucks, directly to the table, by vises, or by workholding fixtures according to their size. Parts clamped to magnetic chucks must be supported around their periphery. To reduce the load on the wheel, the wheel is dressed at an angle. Cooling fluid must always be used when operating these machines. The coolant must be capable of cooling the wheel from its center and periphery simultaneously.

CNC Surface Grinding Machines

The amount of material removed from the workpiece is determined by values entered into the CNC control unit. Movements are automatic and the grinding process continues removing material until the preset value is reached and surface planarity is achieved.

CNC surface grinders have emerged from the combination of grinding technology and advancing computer technology. Today CNC surface grinders are available even in portable sizes. These systems, which have evolved over time, now deliver near‑perfect results under computer control.

CNC surface grinders are a subcategory of grinding machines representing an enhanced form of the grinding process. While the operation is grinding, it is performed with computer assistance. Grinding can be done manually or with numerical code control; when performed with numerical control the machine is called a CNC surface grinder.

Because CNC surface grinders operate by computer or G‑codes rather than manual input, the margin of error is much lower. Errors that could occur from a momentary mistake by an operator are largely eliminated because the machine performs the process fully automatically under numerical control.

An integrated controller with an LCD allows grinding parameters to be entered via panel pages that include various profile grinding modes. A semi‑enclosed guard with a safety lock protects the operator from potential hazards. Overall, the system operates safely and in a highly organized manner.
